The project area is part of the municipality of Benningen (district of Unterallgäu) and the city of Memmingen in the southeast of Bavaria.

It represents the remains of an originally extended calcareous fen.
However, the core area of the nature reserve Benninger fen with its 22 ha still has a considerable size for the type of biotope like the calcareous fen.
